With its many positive uses, Marjoram was once known as a symbol of joy and happiness in ancient cultures.
Marjoram Heritage in Egypt
Egypt is renowned for producing high-quality marjoram, an aromatic herb widely used in culinary, medicinal, and aromatic applications. The country’s warm, Mediterranean-like climate, particularly in the Nile Delta and Upper Egypt, provides ideal growing conditions for marjoram. The fertile soil, enriched by the Nile River, supports the healthy growth of marjoram plants, resulting in a robust yield with a rich concentration of essential oils. Egyptian farmers have honed their expertise in cultivating marjoram over centuries, ensuring that the herb is harvested at its peak to maximize its aromatic and therapeutic properties.
The marjoram essential oil produced in Egypt is highly valued globally for its sweet, woody fragrance and its benefits in aromatherapy, such as promoting relaxation and well-being. Egypt’s combination of optimal growing conditions, fertile land, and agricultural expertise makes it one of the leading and most respected producers of marjoram in the world.
Harvest and Production Process
Marjoram is a perennial herb that comes from the mint family. In some areas of the world, oregano is known as “wild marjoram”, and actual marjoram is known as “sweet marjoram.” Sweet Marjoram (a.k.a. Knotted Marjoram, also as Pot Marjoram) is indigenous to the Mediterranean, Western Asia, the Arabian Peninsula, and the Levant. It is chiefly cultivated in Egypt since ancient times and was known to the ancient Greeks and Romans as a symbol of peace, harmony, and happiness symbolic qualities interestingly reflected in its aromatherapy uses and indications! The leaves are ovular and a gray-green color. It also has tiny, white or pale pink flowers in clusters. The essential oil is steam distilled from dried leaves.
Supporting Farmers
The Marjoram and Geranium we source are grown by the same farmers working with our sourcing partner in Egypt. Farmers receive training in Good Agricultural Practices, soil enrichment, and optimal harvesting techniques. Marjoram has meant more than sustenance; it has meant economic diversification. By growing Marjoram alongside Geranium, the farmers have secured additional income streams.
