Why India?

The Supermint Blend is a proprietary combination of four mint oils coming from our sourcing partner’s network of smallscale farmers in India. Supermint includes Peppermint, Bergamot Mint, Spearmint, and Japanese Mint.

Together with our sourcing partner and NGO partner, Farms & Farmers, we have been working for several years now to scale-up peppermint and spearmint nurseries, plantations, and technical services to a select group of farmers in Bihar, one of the poorest states in India. Our aim has been to help these farmers increase their revenues and profit margins through mint production so they can further invest in their farms, families, and communities. This project has been very successful and has inspired additional farmers, especially younger generations, to add peppermint or spearmint to their annual crop rotation. Currently, we support approximately 16,000 farmers involved in different mint oil production in India.

How does it work?

Our farmers will often grow spearmint, for example, for five months then harvest it. Then, they plant one of their usual crops like rice, wheat, or mustard during alternating growing seasons. Through this type of crop rotation, Indian farmers are able to typically increase their income as much as 40% per year.

Following their mint harvest, nearby community distillation units distill the harvested material. Post-distilled biomass is then dried out and reused to fuel the boiler used for producing steam, a proven sustainable practice. After distillation, farmers are then able to take their oil directly to our sourcing partner for purity testing and can be paid within an hour.
